According to Kentucky.com, a woman has received an 18-month sentence in federal prison for harboring an illegal immigrant. The report claims the Mexican immigrant was working on a local tobacco farm. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a news release stating the defendant brought the woman from Mexico to work, but she socked away a portion of the immigrant’s wages for herself.

The court found that the defendant used coercion while harboring the undocumented Mexican worker for her own personal financial gain. The judge ordered her to pay the victim $1,311 in restitution.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charges. According to reports, she was also an illegal immigrant who had entered the United States after previously getting deported.

Here is another immigration story that is making headlines in Louisville:

Republicans Plan to Deny Funding for President Obama’s Immigration Initiatives

According to the New York Times, lawmakers have claimed Republicans are going to try to block President Obama’s latest immigration initiatives next week by denying funding in a security budget bill. Even if the Senate approves the bill, the President has already threatened to veto the Republican legislation that would discount his immigration action. His plan would allow up to 5 million illegal immigrants to live and work in the United States.

Representative Harold Rogers, who is chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said his committee does not have the authority to deny money from Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS), which carries out most of President Obama’s executive actions. The fees that the CIS collects from immigration applications are what funds the agency.

President Obama issued directives in November that gave temporary relief to nearly 4 million immigrants, as well as work permits that allowed them to seek employment legally.
