The process of obtaining permanent residency in America is a complex one, and those who are applying for green cards fall into one of three categories. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the three main categories are:

  1. Family
  2. Job or place of work
  3. Refugee or asylum status

A fourth category exists, which covers a variety of other, more complex methods. Oregon First Lady Admits to Green Card Marriage

Statesman Journal reports that the first lady of Oregon, Cylvia Hayes, has admitted to illegally marrying an Ethiopian man in order to help him attain residency in the United States. According to the report, the marriage took place 17 years ago. The two met through mutual acquaintances when both were living in the state of Washington, and they married in 1997. Hayes was 29 at the time, while the Ethiopian man, Abraham B. Abraham, was just 19.

The two never lived together and only saw each other a handful of times subsequent to the marriage. They were officially divorced in 2002.

Hayes has subsequently come clean about the matter and accepted responsibility for the decision publicly. She has also admitted to receiving a sum of $5,000 for her role in the marriage. Analysts are unclear how this may affect the local political situation, and Hayes has apparently withdrawn from her work as advisor to the governor on environmental matters.

Green Card Lottery Deadline Announced

EIN Presswire reports that the latest deadline for the United States Diversity Immigration Visa Lottery, popularly known as the Green Card Lottery, has been announced. According to the report, the announcement was made that the deadline for 2014 applications is Nov. 3. Officials are encouraging interested parties to complete their applications now in order to be eligible.

As the report suggests, The Green Card Lottery is one of the most misunderstood practices in United States immigration policy. It is, in many cases, a dream come true for applicants who earn the legal right to work and reside in the United States. In many situations, immigrants incorrectly fill out green card applications, resulting in delays, and interested parties are encouraged to follow instructions clearly or work through an official immigration attorney .

There are many ways for people who are not citizens of the United States to obtain green cards or working visas. However, it is often a difficult process. If you are looking for a Louisville immigration lawyer for guidance, give us a call at 502-400-7890..
